  • The Place is absolutely beautiful, truly a magnificent scene. Being an avid backcountry camper I spend much of my time in Algonquin Provincial Park (Ontario, Canada). I in fact just returned from a two day trip earlier yesterday (Sun, Oct, 14, 2016.) and can't deny how magnificent the colour's were. The aspen poplar look was breathtaking up on "The Lookout" trail; however I can see the steep climb challenging for some so a bit of advise before endeavouring on the short trek... When you come to the fork in the trail (theres only one), take the one on the right. This way you are ensured to take a gradual climb, whereas the left trail head is a long steep climb (intended to be your descent trail). Algonquins staff was excellent, and always has been really. Almost everyone I meet there loves the place or loves the job they have there. Algonquin also has Pet Friendly campsites (Interior and Family campsites); However I highly recommend leaving a rambunctious dog with a sitter or at a Kennel (Speaking as someone who Train's Search and Rescue dogs for a living) If you intend to take him on hikes. A dog pulling strong down hill on a trail is really dangerous there, especially if you can't control your canine pal... whats worse is if something goes wrong 2 hours into your five hour trail with him. Last thing I will say is that If you are going to be going to Algonquin... Air on the side of safety and caution. What I mean is if you plan on endeavouring on a 5 hour hike without a first aid kit, water, map of the trail, good knowledge of the area, food, a backpack to carry it all in, rain jacket, small tarp for shelter, some form of communication, and bear spray then your not ready to hit the trail. ( yes I have needed bear spray before, so buy it and carry it in the holster... Its perfectly legal under the pest control act, and can come in handy against other pests too... not just bears.). You can rent a *SPOT messenger Gen 3* Satellite messaging device from Algonquin Outfitters for a fairly inexpensive price... and this is an absolute must for any backcountry excursions... and still should be taken on marked trails as well. It is a Personal Locating Device (PLB), Satellite messenger (call and text, in and outgoing, paired with your phone), and S.O.S transponder incase you get stuck in a blizzard, rainstorm, break an ankle on the trail, or find another injured party. GET IT AND STAY ALIVE... DO NOT THINK YOU CAN HANDLE EVERYTHING MOTHER NATURE CAN THROW AT YOU ON YOUR OWN... YOU WILL DIE. Now all that being said... Ill keep going back to Algonquin... Ill bring my kids when I have them, and I'll keep doing that till I die. Why? Because nothing can beat waking up lake side in your tent to the soft, echoing call of a Loon on the water. Or laying out on a frozen lake at night while hearing and feeling the Ice crack under you, echoing through out that bone chilling silence that only Algonquin can give you. There is so much that has to offer so long as you respect it... Im no naturalist don't get me wrong... But I do understand that Mother nature is not to be trifled with, but if you respect her... she will bring you things you never thought imaginable ;)
